Still, Vai's tone tonight was superb, the start of "Erotic Nightmares" - dat crunch! "Ballerina 12/24" sounded absolutely amazing too, bathing my ears in the sweetest, smoothest sounds I've heard in a while. Getting to see "Greasy Kid's Stuff" live was a massive treat, I'm not sure it's been on a live setlist since the early 90s. This isn't a new thing, when I first saw him live in 2004 he was playing "The Audience is Listening" with the main riffs transposed up to fit on a 6 string. I had hoped Vai would pull out a Universe for this night - it seems a shame given that this album put seven string guitars pretty much on the map, that Steve has seemed to have given up on them, utilising them only for backing riffs on his later albums. This tour has given him the perfect opportunity to do just that. No seven strings? Dave Weiner was playing a PRS 7 string all night at Newcastle this evening.Īs above, totally raw and stripped back for a Vai gig - which is good imo, as he had gone off the deep end with the "composer, not just a guitarist" stuff, which is all well and good but for years I've been wanting to see him just play his damn guitar again. considering that you could argue that album pioneered the use of 7 strings. not a single 7 string guitar in sight last night. Only negative from a ss.org point of view. Was incredible to see one of the most important guitar instrumental albums of all time be played in full by the master himself. If you not got tickets for this tour you def need to try to see it. Wont ruin any more for any one going as there some great moments and was some very "special guest" apperances that people on here will go mad for, which were very cool. Intro was film clips of Crossroads ("is that you Willy Brown?") before breaking in to a heavy as hell version of Bad Horsie! Totally stripped down band from the last time I saw him in 2012, just drums, bass and Vai & Weiner on guitars.

and am happy to say the show was amazing! Played the album in full obviously, stand out tracks for sure were Erotic Nightmares, Blue Powder, Audience is Listening and of course For the Love of God which was just an incredible performance. So, saw Vai on the second night of his Europeon leg of the P&W 25th Anniversary.
